Serving as a leader requires a major commitment in time. By moving officers "up the ladder" of leadership, individuals can gain a historical perspective of the organization. Further, it provides an opportunity for others to evaluate the individual's leadership capabilities.

- Work effectively with the association chief staff executive, if one exists
- Demonstrate effective communication skills
- Are reliable, accountable and proven performers
- Have a strong interest in non-medical concerns and demonstrated commitment to patient care and well-being
- Demonstrate understanding of political process and the necessity for political involvement
- Are interested in sharing knowledge and expertise
- Participate in community service activities
