Home: Media: Press Releases: American Society of Plastic Surgeons Inducts University of Iowa Physician as New President
Arlington Heights, Ill.—John Canady, MD, Professor of Plastic Surgery, University of Iowa, was inducted as President of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), at Plastic Surgery 2008, the Society’s annual scientific assembly. Dr. Canady will lead the world’s largest plastic surgery association and foremost authority on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery for a one-year term. As ASPS President, Dr. Canady will focus on shifting the public’s image of what plastic surgery is, and what it is that plastic surgeons do.
“All too often, plastic surgery is portrayed as taking something attractive and simply making it more attractive. When, in reality, plastic surgery has historically been the specialty that offers the most free, reconstructive care to patients, most of whom are children,” said Dr. Canady. “My hope for my presidency is that I can help shed some light on the other side of this field – the reconstructive side, in which plastic surgeons are called and relied upon to help rebuild lives.”
An ASPS Member Surgeon since 1992, Dr. Canady has served as President-elect and Treasurer, and as a member of the ASPS Governance Task Force, Council on State Affairs, Leadership Development Committee, Publications Committee, and Public Education Committee. In addition, Dr. Canady is the Co-Chair of the ASPS Corporate Leadership Council and is a member of the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation’s (PSEF) Volunteers in Plastic Surgery.
Dr. Canady has been in practice for 18 years. He received his medical degree from the University of Iowa and completed his general surgery internship at LaCrosse Lutheran Hospital, WI. Dr. Canady also completed two residencies, one in plastic surgery at the University of Kansas and the other in otolaryngology - head and neck at the University of Iowa.
Dr.Canady’s scholarly interests include research involving speech improvement in cleft lip and palate craniofacial treatment, molecular biology of clefting, and changes to the brain biology in children with craniofacial problems. He is also author of “101 Tips to Getting the Residency You Want: A Guide for Medical Students,” a newly released book to help medical students through the highly competitive residency-matching process.
Dr. Canady currently resides in Iowa City, IA, with his wife Laurie and their two children, Frank, 17, and Adam, 15.
