Repair of the face is challenging! It requires thought. It can be simplified if the intellectual process has been clarified, principles explained, and difficult cases presented to illustrate successful approaches.

This year's symposium will cover a broad range of problems with emphasis on the scalp, forehead, cheek, lips, and eyelids. During the first two days, the repair of these specific facial areas will be discussed in depth. Preoperative diagnosis, evaluation, planning, and operative technique will be presented in detail. Included will be presentations on the current understanding and approaches to keloids, HIV facial lipodystrophy, VII nerve repair, melanoma, atypical skin cancers, facial nevi and hemangioma, acute burns and late reconstruction, and the injuries of our wars overseas.

The last day will be devoted to the aesthetic repair of the periorbita and eyelids to detail the reconstruction of trauma, congenital, cancer injuries, and the complications of aesthetic surgery. Interaction with faculty is encouraged through question and answer opportunities throughout the program.

Abstracts for presentation on facial reconstruction topics are welcomed. The best abstract(s) will be recognized. Bring a difficult case for discussion with the faculty! And all this in the warm Southwest - relax and learn.

Support for this program is provided by a generous educational grant from Fresh Start Surgical Gifts.

Fresh Start transforms the lives of disadvantaged children and young people with physical deformities through the gift of Fresh Start. Fresh Start accomplishes its purpose through a community of volunteers dedicated to providing the highest quality reconstructive surgery and related services.

At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Summarize the latest in melanoma diagnosis, evaluation and treatment
  • Examine the nuances of atypical skin cancers
  • Discuss what's new in the science and treatment of keloids
  • Repair the scalp, cheek, lip, chin, and eyelid with improved ability
  • Manage composite skin grafts for nasal reconstruction
  • Describe comprehensive facial treatment
  • Successfully manage congenital nevi and hemangioma
  • Utilize increased knowledge of the anatomy and use of facial flaps
  • Practice with an increased awareness of related patient safety issues and concerns
