Research Grant and Fellowship Applications

2010 Research Priorities

The PSEF Research Oversight Committee (ROC), charged with identifying emerging and ongoing areas in need of further scientific research in plastic surgery. In March 2009, the committee, which is composed of members of ASPS and other related plastic surgery sub-specialty organizations, identified the following high-priority research areas in plastic surgery:

  • Regenerative Medicine
  • Tissue Engineering
  • Composite Tissue Allotransplantation (CTA)
  • Stem and Progenitor Cells (therapeutic realities)
  • Development of Outcomes Measurement Tools/Instruments

When making funding determinations, the PSEF will consider applications addressing the ROC priorities as well as all important and relevant areas of research impacting the practice of plastic surgery. The above list has been provided as reference.

2010 Applications

The call for 2010 applications will begin August 2009 and close December 15, 2009.

This year, all grant applications must be submitted through the ease and convenience of an online format, delivered through proposalCENTRAL. Application guidelines and information on using proposalCENTRAL can be found under each grant listing.

Pilot Research Grant:

The Pilot Research Grant is designed to promote plastic surgery advancement and innovation. The grants provide “seed” funding and are intended to allow researchers to conduct preliminary studies related to plastic surgery science that set the stage for applications to external funding sources.

Research Fellowship Grant:

The Research Fellowship Grants are awarded for the purpose of encouraging research and academic career development in Plastic Surgery. The PSEF Research Fellowship is for training in any area of Plastic Surgery and designed for those who wish to supplement one year of clinical training for a research experience. The PSEF/KCI Wound Care Research Fellowship is open to plastic surgery residents and recent plastic surgery resident graduates focusing on a project in wound care management.

National Endowment:

The National Endowment for Plastic Surgery was established in 1994 as a specialty-wide cooperative undertaking to ensure the future of Plastic Surgery. The purpose of the Endowment is to support research and development of projects that address clinically relevant and immediate issues facing the practice of Plastic Surgery. The Endowment allows the specialty to be proactive in identifying opportunities and quickly respond to changing demands on the specialty. Sponsoring Institutions as well as individuals are encouraged to apply for funding.

  • Application and Guidelines will be available August 2009.

PSEF/AAO-HNSF Combined Grant:

The PSEF/AAO-HNSF Combined Grant is designed to promote interdisciplinary research by encouraging a collaborative research effort between the specialties of Plastic Surgery and Otolaryngology. Recipients of this grant must demonstrate a potential for excellence in research and training and a commitment to an academic research career in either Plastic Surgery or Otolaryngology.

  • The PSEF/AAO-HNSF Combined Research Grant will be available again in 2010.

Scientific Essay Contest:

The Scientific Essay Contest recognizes the authors of essays or articles that address timely and important plastic surgery topics. To encourage general understanding of issues impacting the practice of plastic surgery, the essays and articles submitted to the Scientific Essay Contest are written to communicate to a broad audience. The Contest is comprised of four categories which include: basic science research, clinical research, cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, and the theory, history, ethics or socioeconomic issues in the art and science of plastic and reconstructive surgery.
