The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) is the world's largest organization of board-certified plastic surgeons. Representing more than 7,000 member surgeons, the Society is recognized as a leading authority and information source on cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery.

Founded in 1931, ASPS represents physicians certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The Society is comprised of more than 94 percent of all board-certified plastic surgeons in the United States, but ASPS members can be found in countries all over the world, making the Society's efforts truly global.

ASPS' mission is to advance quality patient care by encouraging high standards of training, ethics, physician practice and research in the specialty. These high standards mean every ASPS Member Surgeon meets the following requirements to maximize your chances of a safe and satisfying plastic surgery experience: 

  • Has at least six years of training and experience in surgery, with three years specifically in plastic surgery.
  • Is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. International members must meet strict requirements that adhere to ASPS' high standards for membership.
  • Operates only in accredited medical facilities.
  • Adheres to a strict code of ethics.
  • Fulfills continuing education requirements, including patient safety techniques.
  • Will be your partner, working with you to achieve your goals.

The cornerstone of ASPS is patient safety. The Society actively seeks new and innovative ways to educate not only patients, but also its members through continuing medical education efforts. ASPS' leadership in outreach and educational campaigns, such as Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day, is an example of our commitment to utilizing the efforts of patients, surgeons, industry professionals and others to make a difference in lives and communities.

Plastic surgery is real surgery, and all surgery carries some risk. ASPS is committed to helping you make the most informed decisions about procedures, and ensuring your safety. Anyone can wear a white coat, but not everyone is an ASPS Member Surgeon.
