Estheticians Look to Expand Scope in Oregon

At the beginning of the State's legislative session in January, estheticians in Oregon introduced House Bill 2642 which would allow certified laser estheticians to perform laser procedures without physician supervision.

The measure is designed to create a Board of Certified Laser Estheticians and allow the board to grant a certificate to independently practice advanced non-ablative esthetic procedures. Procedures that would be allowed to be performed with this certificate include body contouring, skin resurfacing, laser peel, vein reduction, acne reduction, cellulite reduction, tattoo removal and pigment lentigo reduction.

The bill, which was sponsored by House Majority Leader Val Hoyle, has not yet been referred to a standing committee.

ASPS continues to monitor this legislation and is working with a group of medical specialties to formulate an opposition strategy.
