STATE | ASPS and FSPS Work Together to Protect Hair Restoration Patients

The Florida Society of Plastic Surgeons (FSPS) has been diligently working to pass legislation that would define hair restoration as a surgical procedure and prevent unlicensed technicians from performing the procedure in the state. This month, ASPS bolstered FSPS's efforts by submitting comments to the Florida Senate Committee on Health Policy (Committee) supporting the legislation that would fix this problem. Performance of hair restorations and transplants by untrained and unlicensed technicians has become a serious national patient safety issue, and horrible negative outcomes from botched surgeries have made national news.

ASPS is pleased to report that after ASPS and FSPS submitted comments in favor of the bill, S.B. 974 passed out of Committee by a unanimous vote. We will continue to track and advocate for this legislation as it winds its way through the Florida democratic process. Additionally, ASPS is continuing to monitor this issue on a national level, and we expect this topic will receive attention in other state legislatures this session.
