Dr. Mark L. Smith is Director of Plastic Surgery for Continuum Cancer Centers of New York, a multi-hospital cancer program that includes Beth Israel Medical Center, St. Luke's and Roosevelt Medical Centers, and New York Eye and Ear Infirmary. He is an expert in Breast Reconstruction and Head and Neck Reconstruction and is double-fellowship trained in Microsurgery and Craniofacial Surgery. Dr. Smith also serves as Chief of Pediatric Plastic Surgery and Associate Chief of Plastic Surgery at Beth Israel Medical Center. He is Director of the Continuum Craniofacial and Cleft Palate Center and an Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Smith has published and been invited to speak internationally on Microsurgical Breast Reconstruction, Head and Neck Reconstruction, Facial Reanimation, Craniofacial Surgery and Pediatric Plastic Surgery. As an international volunteer for the past 2 decades, he has performed reconstructive surgery and taught local surgeons in developing countries in Africa, Asia, Central America and South America.

 

 

 

An expert in complex reconstructive surgery, Dr. Smith was the first surgeon to perform Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator (DIEP) flap breast reconstructions in New York City. He was also a pioneer in Oncoplastic Surgery, publishing the first case series in the United States using oncoplastic techniques for breast conservation in patients with breast cancer. He has trained over 50 residents in plastic surgery, including many surgeons who now perform DIEP flap reconstruction. In addition to Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator (DIEP) flaps, Dr. Smith performs Superficial Inferior Epigastric Artery (SIEA) flaps and Gluteal Artery Perforator (GAP) flaps for breast reconstruction and numerous types of microsurgical flaps for head and neck reconstruction, including facial reanimation surgery. As Director of the Continuum Craniofacial and Cleft Palate Center and plastic surgeon for the Vascular Birthmark Institute of New York, he also treats complex birth defects such as cleft lips and palates, craniosynostosis, facial paralysis and vascular malformations. 

 

 

Dr. Smith received his B.A. from Cornell University and his M.D. from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He did his General Surgery and Plastic Surgery residencies at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. He completed two fellowships, one in Microvascular and Oncologic Reconstruction at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and the other in Craniofacial and Pediatric Plastic Surgery at University of Washington’s Harborview Hospital and Seattle Children’s Hospital. He has been recognized by his peers as one of the “Best Doctor’s in America” for the last 10 years.

Dr. Smith sees patients in consultation at the Phillips Ambulatory Care Center of Beth Israel Medical Center. This state-of-the-art medical facility is situated in the heart of Manhattan, overlooking Union Square Park. Upon arrival, Dr. Smith's staff will guide you through the registration process and his Physician Assistant will obtain your medical history. During your consultation, Dr. Smith will discuss in detail your surgical options and his recommendations regarding treatment. Your questions and concerns will be addressed before you make any decisions. Dr. Smith provides patients with the information and guidance required to make the correct choices based on their individual needs.

Facilities

The Phillips Ambulatory Care Center, located at Union Square East, is a state-of-the-art outpatient surgery and medical facility that houses experts in almost every area of medicine. Nearby, is Beth Israel's Comprehensive Cancer Center, located on 15th Street between 8th and 9th Avenue. The Comprehensive Cancer Center is dedicated solely to cancer treatment and ambulatory cancer and reconstructive surgery. Cosmetic procedures are performed at our affiliated surgery centers that specialize in the care of outpatient and overnight cosmetic surgery patients.

Patients undergoing major reconstructive surgery are treated at Beth Israel Medical Center's main hospital, located on 1st Avenue and 16th Street. Beth Israel Medical Center provides world-class supportive care for adult and pediatric patients undergoing brain surgery, cancer surgery, and major reconstructive procedures. Private luxury accommodations are available on the Chris and Morton P. Hyman Patient Care Unit located on the hospital's 3rd floor.
