Introduction
Applications
are now being accepted for the American Society of Plastic Surgeons® (ASPS) / Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation’s® (PSEF) International Scholar Program and the Scholar Program of the American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons (ASMS), which enables plastic surgeons from abroad to come to the United States for three to six months study at host plastic surgery institutions.
The plastic surgeon must be in the developmental stage of their studies, have completed their plastic surgery training and have flexibility to travel and study at more than one institution.
The focus of this study may be clinical, research, or a combination of the two.

Description
Applicants are solicited through announcements sent to the International Confederation for Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, as well as through articles in Plastic Surgery News and Maxillofacial News. Program information is also available on the ASMS website www.maxface.org.
Completed applications and supporting documents must be received in the PSEF Executive Office by June 30, 2008. The International Scholar Committee will then review the applications and select the scholar(s) who will be invited to visit in 2009.
Each International Scholar will receive a stipend to assist with travel and living expenses for a three to six month period of study in the U.S. Every effort will be made to match the particular needs, goals and preferences of each winning scholar to the participating institution willing and capable of providing the optimal environment for attaining specific objectives.
While PSEF and ASMS will assist in every way possible, it is the primary responsibility of the host institution to aid the scholar in obtaining necessary licensure, housing, etc.

Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible, candidates must:
- Submit a one-page written essay to accompany the application describing the reasons for wishing to become an International Scholar and how the experience will help the citizens of their native country.
- Be recommended and endorsed by their local or regional plastic surgery society and/or by their department chairman.
- Live outside North America.
- Provide documentation confirming COMPLETION of an approved training program in plastic surgery outside North America.
- Applicant must be less than 10 years out of training.
- Actively practice plastic surgery in their native country.
- Have demonstrated the potential for academic and clinical excellence.
- Be in good health.
- Be able to communicate verbally in English.
- Applicants may re-apply for the program a maximum of 3 years.

Assessment
After returning home, the scholars will be asked to submit an essay describing their experiences in the United States, what objectives were accomplished during their fellowship and how the scholarship has affected their career goals. The scholars will be asked to critique the program and to offer suggestions for modification and improvement.
