PSEF Visiting Professors

Visits Available for the July 2008–July 2009 Academic Year

PSEF is committed to the support of research and educational programs for plastic surgeons.

Visiting Professors advance PSEF’s mission by instructing surgeons using their clinical, technical, and educational expertise.

Universities and training institutions may take advantage of the wealth of knowledge and innovative perspectives on plastic surgery represented by the 2008-2009 Visiting Professors (see below).

Hosting a Visiting Professor

Schedule your visit with a PSEF Visiting Professor for the academic year July 2008 – June 2009. To host one of the upcoming Visiting Professors at your plastic surgery training program or regional society meeting, please contact Nancy Pockrandt, Governance and Specialty Coordinator at 847-981-5412 or npockrandt@plasticsurgery.org to assist with coordination of a visit.

Dr. Allen’s lectures focus on the evolving field of Septocutaneous Flaps for Breast Reconstruction, the importance of Preoperative Imaging of Donor Sites with CT and MRI and Vascularized Lymph Node Transfer for Lymphedema.

Dr. Bartlett’s lectures focus on Syndromic Synostoses: Management from Infancy to Adulthood; Distraction Osteogenesis of the Mandible; Management of Post Traumatic Orbital Deformities; Management of Small Nasal Defects; The Forehead Flap in Nasal Reconstruction; Management of Pediatric Facial Fractures; The Fractured Pediatric Mandible.

Dr. Buncke’s lectures will forcus on topics related to Microvascular Surgery, including the history of the development of microsurgery, microsurgical management of upper and lower extremity injuries, functional muscle transplantation.

Dr. Gosain’s lectures focus on  Common craniofacial anomalies; a multidisciplinary approach to the care of craniopagus twins; Distraction osteogenesis in correction of congenital facial deformities; Rational applications of biomaterials in craniofacial surgery; Management of panfacial fractures; Gene expression in craniosynostosis; Vascular anomalies in the pediatric age group; Dynamic facial reanimation for children and adults with facial paralysis.

William Kuzon, MD
Ann Arbor, MI

Dr. Kuzon’s lectures focus on complex reconstructive surgery including the reconstruction of complex abdominal wall defects, the reconstruction of soft-tissue defects after sarcoma excision, the management of long-standing facial paralysis, and the surgical management of patients with gender identity disorder.  He will also focus on his extensive research experience in the areas of tissue engineering, skeletal muscle mechanics, and peripheral nerve physiology.

Dr. Linda Phillips’ lectures focus on Mentoring: How to Give It, Why We Need It, Breast Surgery for the Obese Patient, Wound Healing, Body Contouring, Pressure Sore Etiology and Treatment.

Dr. Sanger’s lectures focus on head and neck free flap reconstruction, especially mandible reconstruction; hand reconstruction and peripheral nerve, including brachial plexus repair, tendon transfers; microvascular flaps, classification and development, complications associated with older style gel implant failures.

Local Sponsor Guidelines

  • The local sponsor for each visit must be an active member of ASPS/PSEF
  • It is recommended that visits be of two days duration
  • PSEF provides airfare transportation
  • PSEF provides a $250 honorarium for each day of the visit
  • The sponsoring institution is responsible for lodging and local transportation expenses
  • Each sponsor arranges specific visit details directly with the Visiting Professor
  • Visits should usually involve lecture, discussion groups, patient evaluation, and patient rounds
  • If operative procedures involving the Visiting Professor are planned, the local sponsor must arrange the legalities and specific privileges required
  • The sponsor will complete and submit an evaluation of the visit to the ASPS/PSEF Executive Office
