Name: JaneProfession: Stay-at-home Mother of TwoProcedure: Breast Reconstruction Jane underwent a single mastectomy in June 2002. She subsequently received a prophylactic mastectomy on the other breast; both breasts were reconstructed.
The mother of two young boys was determined to “look the same” after the cancer surgery, and her inquiries took her to an ASPS member surgeon
She underwent breast reconstruction, silicone breast implants in October 2002, and today Jane is “extremely satisfied with the results. Someone who undergoes a mastectomy is never the same, but the breast reconstruction makes me look and feel like the person I was before.”
Part of that feel involves the return to activities in which she was involved prior to the cancer surgery – in one instance, better than ever.
“I was uncomfortable for about two weeks after the reconstructive surgery, but at the six-week mark I was back to running and playing tennis. I’m playing tennis better than ever,” Jane says.
“I can still put on a tight, little jogging bra, and bathing suits and tennis tops, and look good, she says. “People who don’t know I had the surgery can’t tell. I like that.”
Jane says she also appreciated her surgeon’s demeanor, patience and approach to her reconstructive surgery. “The most important reason for selecting my surgeon was that he made me feel very comfortable with the procedure,” she says.“He discussed all the options thoroughly and patiently with me and my husband.”
“The whole experience has changed me. I actually feel more confident and happy,” she says.
