Heather J. Furnas, MD, FACS

The thing I enjoy most about plastic and cosmetic surgery is the impact it has on my patient's lives. I have a special interest in breast, body, face, rhinoplasty, and female cosmetic genital surgery. My philosophy is to treat my patients the way I like to be treated: with kindness & compassion. My team at Santa Rosa and Novato's Plastic Surgery Associates and the Allegro MedSpa serve patients in Northern California and beyond. We look forward to meeting your aesthetic goals!

About

Meet Dr. Heather Furnas

My plastic surgeon father was my inspiration to become a plastic surgeon when few women did so. I first got to see him operate in bush hospitals in East Africa, where he served as a Flying Doctor. I met my husband during our training years at Stanford. After working in different hospitals for most of those years, we knew we wanted to work together. We started out in Boston, where we were on the clinical faculty at Harvard, but we returned to Northern California, where we raised our two children.

M family has always been very important to my husband and me, and our practice is like our second family. Choosing a plastic surgeon is based on trust, and our staff plays an important role as part of our plastic surgery team. We specifically hire people who will treat our patients well, and we invest in staff training on an ongoing basis. In fact, we do many things behind the scenes for the safety and comfort of our patients because our patients deserve the best, safest, most advanced care.

The best way to summarize our practice philosophy is with our mission: We strive to add joy to our patients’ lives through genuine caring, generosity of spirit, and the quality of our work. This statement is our guiding light in everything we do.

Values:

1.Kindness and compassion

2.Attention to detail in all aspects of our practice

3.High standards and ethics

4.Safety of our patients

5.Ongoing education for our entire staff to be our very best

The better our patients understand their procedure, including anatomic limitations, reasonable results, and instructions to promote the lowest complication rates, the better the outcome. Consequently, patient education is an important part of our practice. In addition to our written materials and our TouchMD program, we offer our patients continually updated information on our YouTube channel, our website, our blog, our newsletter, social media, and our special events. We love teaching as much as our patients love learning!

My father was right. When I began my plastic surgery training, he told me that being a plastic surgeon is a true privilege. His patients loved him, and I couldn’t have had a better role model.

As an alumnus of Standard University and UCLA School of Medicine, and co-founder of Plastic Surgery Associates and Allegro MedSpa I have become one of California’s most accomplished aesthetic providers. I enjoy mixing traditional cosmetic surgery techniques and innovative cutting-edge procedures for beautiful & natural results for the face & body.  While I excel in facelifts, breast augmentation, body contouring and other popular surgical procedures, I have a unique specialty in female genital rejuvenation techniques like vaginoplasty & labiaplasty. I serve patients across Marin & Sonoma Counties, as well as the larger San Francisco Bay area, Sacramento & beyond.

Your Consultation

Some patients know exactly what their goals are and the procedure(s) that will get them there. Others have a clear goal, but the procedure they are considering won’t help them achieve success. And some want a change that no surgery can deliver. A consultation allows me to explore a patient’s goals, review her health history, and examine her. My recommendation for how best to achieve the patient’s goal is based on a synthesis of this information

Because so many of our patients come from a distance, we offer a virtual consultation through our secure website. This allows me to review the patient’s health history, goals, and photographs of the area(s) of concern. This process allows me to guide the patient toward the procedure(s) that are most likely to help her achieve her goal. Then when she is able to come in for an in-office consultation and physical examination, I am able to confirm or adjust my recommendations.

Patient education is a large part of preparing a patient for a procedure. When a patient understands the possibilities, but also the limits of a procedure, she is more likely to be satisfied with the results. Just as importantly, understanding the relationship between following instructions to lower the complication rate is the best way to increase the odds of a good outcome.  For that reason, both surgeons and staff invest a lot of time into creating patient education tools, such as videos, blogs, updating webpages, and published articles.

TouchMD is a great in-office tool that I use during my consultation. Our team can populate it with photos, videos, and written material about all the procedures we do. TouchMD has greatly facilitated my ability to teach. It allows me to show a variety of our results during the consultation, and patients can access the site by logging on from home.

After I gather a patient’s goals, my job is to guide them through careful evaluation and education. I don’t talk patients into having surgery. Sometimes I recommend no surgery. Even if I can get a good result, if I can tell the procedure isn’t going to achieve the patient’s goal, then I won’t perform the operation. My goal is a satisfied patient. If my patients are happy, I'm happy!

Facilities

Our surgery suite is accredited by both AAAASF and IMQ. Our patients' safety is at the top of the list above all else. Emotional support is also an essential part of good care. Patients frequently comment on well-cared-for the felt when they went through surgery, from the smiling faces of the staff, the cheerful peach tones of the rooms, the soothing feel of the warming blanket, even a gown that covers completely (even the back!).

Depending on the type of case and what's best for the patient, we use local anesthesia, sedation, and general anesthesia. We use only board-certified physician anesthesiologists at our facility.

Our surgical technicians and nurses are not only well-trained, they're so nice that patients often mention them by name after surgery, asking me to thank them for such a great experience.

It's natural to be nervous about surgery, so we roll out the red carpet to make our patients feel comfortable, safe, and cared for.

In addition, we hold medical privileges at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and Sutter Hospital. We are pleased to hold medical privileges at such amazing hospitals. This also enables us to provide immediate and convenient care to our many clients.

We’re located at the corner of Highway 12 and Mission Drive in Santa Rosa, California. There is plenty of onsite parking, including handicap accessible spaces.

Our second location is just off highway 101 in Novato, in a complex called Novato Gateway. There is plenty of covered parking for your convenience.

Patient Testimonials

I have nothing but great things to say about Dr. Furnas and her whole office staff. From pre-op appointments, to the day of surgery and post op appointments they were always so professional, organized, clean, & always welcomed me with a warm and friendly smile. I love how each and every one of the staff addresses me by my first name! I would highly recommend Dr. Furnas, I am thrilled with my breast augmentation results!
I have known Dr. Furnas for many years and just had my second surgery with her. The first was an upper eyelid surgery when I was 51 and now, at age 68, I had a facelift, CO2 laser and fat injections. I was out and about one week post surgery and back at the gym after 2 weeks. The results are amazing (and subtle) and my friends are impressed....those that know that is. For such a lot of surgery, it was a non event. At week 3, other than a bit of residual redness from the laser, I am fully back in my life. Thank you Heather, you continue to amaze.
My experience with PSA was wonderful. The staff is warm and inviting. And they all strive to make you feel as comfortable as possible. The office is clean and well kept as well. When i went to Dr. Furnas i was a little nervous due to the type of procedure i was having. I first saw her for labiaplasty, now if you know what labiaplasty is I'm sure you can see why i was nervous and a little embarrassed. But in my case i was to uncomfortable in that area not to see someone about it. Looking back on it now i really wish i had met and saw Dr. Furnas sooner. She made me feel safe and comfortable. And after the procedure was done i absolutely loved my results. i was able to finally be active comfortably. I had also undergone breast augmentation by Dr. furnas and was pleasantly please on the results of that as well. She is very professional and a true artist. i highly Recommend her.

Lines beneath the breasts

Breast Lift

Member Response:

The lines you noticed are scars that result from removal of skin. A breast lift involves removal of skin, which is accomplished with an incision (cut), and anytime the skin is cut, a scar results. Scarring goes through a period of change until it is mature. While it is immature, the scars are pink. The final appearance of the scar is usually flat and pale, depending on individual factors, such as genetics and tension. Plastic surgeons like to minimize scars. In my own practice I do a lift only if there is extra skin. The scars are the result of tailoring the breast for a better shape. Hope that helps.

Liposuction question followup

Liposuction

Member Response:

That's terrific news that you lost a total of 28 pounds. Is your bariatric surgeon able to connect you with resources to support further weight loss? Liposuction is a great technique for removed fat cells from a persistent bulge, but it isn't effective for weight loss. Having a formal program with someone you check in with can be helpful, since weight loss is really a life style change rather than a diet. All the best.

Recently I had to go in to get a Capsular contracture. In Layman terms it means my skin easily stretches. So my perfect breast augmentation done by the amazing Dr Furnas about 3 years ago started to hang lower then my pocket. They use a mesh if needed to give my skin a little more back bone and extra sutures! They are perfect! I would say it’s like having the breasts I had as a teen....But I never had any so I wouldn’t know. LOL All I know is I’m beyond grateful. Im beyond happy with the results. And my confidence has a little more boost. My post op was quicker then the first time as well. I was up and moving the same day!!! I came in and Dr Furnas and her team gave me better results tan I could have ever imagined. Thank you Dr Furnas and psa, I love you.
