Government Affairs Associate

The Government Affairs Associate works to analyze and influence policy proposals at the federal and state levels. This position executes ASPS policy tracking, analysis and drafting of comments at the federal level, provides recommendations on organizational responses to key issues and executes the operational work of all federal ASPS grassroots initiatives. The Government Affairs Associate also supports state advocacy and key ASPS initiatives, the Legislative Advocacy Committee, the ASPS Advocacy Summit and advocacy communications and publications.

What You Will Do

Issue Tracking, Analysis and Engagement

  • Monitor and report on legislative and regulatory activity impacting plastic surgery
    • Track federal policy issues
    • Regularly brief the Government Affairs team on developments related to key legislation
    • Manage ASPS's federal policy tracking activities and internal information management systems, monitoring and guiding the work of ASPS's federal consultants
      • Develop thorough and efficient systems of policy tracking and reporting
      • monitor performance and communicate issues to the Director
    • Conduct policy research and policy analysis on legislative and regulatory proposals
  • Produce analyses and reference tools to support advocacy
    • Analyze existing federal laws and regulations to support advocacy strategy, response and messaging
    • Identify and capitalize on opportunities to proactively engage and shape policy development on key ASPS priorities
    • Create resources – such as talking points, issue briefs, member communications and key contact identification processes – that activate physician members at the grassroots level
    • Respond to individual ASPS physician member federal policy inquiries

Advocacy and Government Affairs

  • Manage federal grassroots advocacy initiatives
    • Lead the development of all federal grassroots campaigns through the ASPS Advocacy in Action site
    • Create issue, legislation and advocacy campaign-specific letters and talking points for use by ASPS member advocates in campaigns
    • Manage the work of the Policy and Advocacy Coordinator to build grassroots campaigns

Advocacy Program Support

  • Support Director, Federal Affairs Manager and Washington, DC-based consultants in the execution of the biennial ASPS Advocacy Summit and biennial regional fly-ins by:
    • Leading the development of marketing communications for the Summit and fly-ins
    • Developing supporting materials for onsite panels and sessions
    • Developing relevant briefing materials and background information
    • Staffing the meetings on-site

Legislative Advocacy Committee

  • Support the Federal Affairs Manager in producing federal-focused content for committee meetings
  • Provide project-based support to federal-focused projects and initiatives


  • Work with the Advocacy and Health Policy Coordinator to prepare candidate assessment materials for PlastyPAC Board of Governors meetings

Contribute to ASPS Communications

  • Help develop story ideas related to federal activities for ASPS's advocacy publications and contributions. As needed, prepare background materials for use by a freelance writer in writing long-form articles
  • Write weekly federal activity-related submissions for ASPS Focus
  • Write weekly and monthly Activity Updates on key federal developments
  • Develop social media content to publicize ASPS's federal activity and advance ASPS advocacy initiatives
  • Develop web content and updates on federal advocacy activities

External Relations

  • Work with the Federal Affairs Manager to represent ASPS's and advance plastic surgery's interest in the Alliance of Specialty Medicine, the Health Coalition on Liability and Access, the Surgical Care Coalition and other federal coalitions
  • Support ASPS operations at the AMA House of Delegates
    • Work with the Senior Government Affairs Associate and Advocacy and Policy Coordinator to analyze and track HoD resolutions prior to and throughout the HoD meetings

What You Will Need

Education: A Bachelor's degree in political science, public policy, health administration or health-related field. Communications training with political/policy experience and/or an advanced degree in a related field is desired.

Experience: At least two to three years of direct experience in any or all of the following:

  • Working in a policy position or a non-entry-level communications position for an elected official
  • Lobbying at the federal level
  • Monitoring and responding to federal legislative and regulatory issues;

Skills and Knowledge: Successful candidates will possess and be able to demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of federal legislative and regulatory processes
  • Strong policy research skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal, organization and political skills
  • Computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office, project management software (Asana experience a plus), grassroots advocacy software and political action committee management software

Experience in health/medical association management is considered a plus.
