Public Relations and Communications Associate

The Public Relations and Communications Associate is responsible for promoting patient safety, groundbreaking research and humanitarian efforts related to plastic and reconstructive surgery to the public, media and medical community. This position requires strong written and verbal communication skills, an interest in health, fitness and beauty trends and a desire to work with the media to pitch and facilitate related content. This position requires strong written and verbal communication skills, a talent for identifying human interest stories and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

What You Will Do

Public Relations

  • Routinely engages with the press to implement public and media relations strategy
  • Maintains press lists, creates talking points, conducts interviews and uses tactics such as press releases, pitches, reports and newsjacking
  • Oversees media inbox, responds promptly to media inquiries and coordinates member surgeons for appearances or interviews
  • Monitors and research emerging trends, flags relevant plastic surgery developments and recommends next steps in the PR function
  • Monitors press coverage and inquiries, field media requests and flags relevant developments
  • Generates interview questions and talking points on topics relevant to scope of established PR strategy
  • Serves as contact for agency on PR-specific projects and assists with crisis communications as needed
  • Sources, prepares and coordinates member surgeons for interviews with media outlets
  • Consistently writes and edits content for consumer-facing website and publications as needed
  • Pitches ideas for content and coverage based on data and trends impacting plastic surgery
  • Conducts interviews across topics in specialty with surgeons and patients alike

Content Management

  • Sources, writes and edits content published across various platforms, including public-facing (consumer website, magazines and social media) and internal (articles in ASPS news publications, Annual Report)
  • Accurate copyediting, use of AP style and writing quality keyword-rich copy under tight deadlines are vital
  • Works with The Plastic Surgery Foundation team to support annual BRA Day initiative

Project Management

  • Coordinates ASPS Patients of Courage program and supports further sponsorship and development of patient-driven storytelling
  • Sources and coordinates on-camera interviews and podcast appearances for member surgeons on ASPS-produced media
  • Leads projects and collaborates across departments (with Publications, Advocacy, Membership and Executive Leadership)
  • Coordinates projects such as the ASPS Annual Report and annual Breast Reconstruction magazine

Travel is required; approximately 2-3 weeks per year

What You Will Need


Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations or related field


Three to five years in journalism, PR or related field
