Director of Research and Scientific Affairs
Katie Sommers is the director of research and scientific affairs, responsible for providing management to the ASPS's and The Plastic Surgery Foundation's (The PSF) internally developed registries, clinical studies, investigator-initiated research grants and researcher education programs.
In this role, Katie enhances existing programs and develops new initiatives to support the advancement of plastic surgery research. She also develops relationships with key opinion leaders and regulatory officials and fosters clinical trial networks within the specialty.
Since joining ASPS in 2011, Katie has made many contributions to the ASPS/PSF such as implementing The PSF's PROFILE and GRAFT registries and being a key contributor in the development of The PSF's National Breast Implant Registry.
Katie has more than seven years experience working in clinical research. She previously worked in the Department of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the University of Chicago (U of C). There she served as lead clinical research associate, acting as a liaison between various cooperative groups and oncology clinical research associates, while implementing registry protocols for pediatric cancer patients. She also managed multiple registries, which served as a resource for future outcomes research. Katie began her career at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.
Katie earned a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from St. Mary's University of Minnesota and a Masters of Public Health in Epidemiology from the University of Michigan School of Public Health. She is a published research author and a member of the American Public Health Association.
A Michigan native, Katie lives with her husband David and Princess Fiona, their two-year-old bull dog, in Schaumburg, Ill. She's a sports enthusiast, always rooting for Michigan football and the Chicago Bears. She enjoys running and spending time with family and friends in the Upper Peninsula.
