The Resident Education Curriculum (REC) has been integrated into the curricula of most U.S.-based training programs since 2011. The REC provides over 100 modules of self-study content covering the breadth of plastic surgery practice to more than 1,400 American/Canadian and 600 International residents/fellows.

The modules open with learning objectives and a required pre-test to gauge the base level of knowledge prior to the exposure of the learning materials. Following the pre-test, the user is provided with at least five "best of" clinical journal articles to read, slideshow presentations to review, clinical case scenarios to consider and, in many cases, surgical video(s) to watch. Finally, the user is provided with a reading list of additional resources to study and a post-test, which includes remediation via discussion and references.
