LIMITLESS Leaders Mentorship

The Limitless Mentorship Initiative is a new program launching in spring 2022 to provide mentorship to women surgeons who are members of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), The Aesthetic Society (TAS) or the Americas Hernia Society (AHS).

Why a mentor program for women surgeons by women surgeons?

The purpose of the mentoring program is to support women surgeons at various stages of their career development. As women in a demanding field, we face an array of challenges, some of which may be more often encountered by women than men.

Women may perceive that perseverance and hard work are all that is needed to advance and are less likely to recognize the importance of forming relationships with influential superiors. In surgery, men often serve as mentors to women though, over time, as more women enter the surgical fields, this is changing. "Perceived value congruence, common development experiences and membership in the same social networks may facilitate a stronger bond between male proteges and male mentors."1 Thus, women may be at a disadvantage without women mentors.

If we look at salaries, studies have shown wage disparities between women and men in the corporate world, with men earning higher salaries compared to women. One factor that may play a role in this disparity is access to senior management. "The formation of mentoring relationships with senior managers is thought to have positive career effects for the protégé."2

Why participate in the Limitless Program as a mentee? If your goals and aspirations include any of the following, this program is for you!

  • Professional advancement in academia
  • Maximizing income potential
  • Public recognition of expertise
  • Recognition as a key opinion leader
  • Research and publication
  • Flexible work schedule
  • Balance of family and career
  • Advancement in professional societies

We expect this mentor-mentee program will evolve over time, with the mentee having different mentors depending on the issues they confront at any given stage of their career. Our goal is to create a flexible program that benefits both the mentee and mentor, capturing the experience and wisdom of women surgeons who have blazed a path in their specialties.

We are excited to launch this program in the near future. If you are interested in learning about the Limitless Mentorship Initiative, please reach out to me at drtracypfeifer@drpfeifer.com.
