Celebrity transparency in plastic surgery
We've been seeing an increasing acceptance and embracing of plastic surgery in recent years, but things went next-level when Kylie Jenner responded to a comment on TikTok with specifics about her breast augmentation, right down to the implant type, size and placement.
This shift in celebrity transparency around plastic surgery marks a significant departure from the days of stars denying having had work done, even when some of the work was far from subtle.
Along with helping to destigmatize plastic surgery, these candid conversations can also help people make informed decisions about the procedures and treatments they choose to pursue with guidance from a board-certified plastic surgeon, that is.
How celebrity transparency in plastic surgery benefits patients
Plastic surgeons, including Kristy Hamilton, MD, see the uptick in celebrity transparency as a positive trend for several reasons, beginning with the "reality check" that achieving the perfect aesthetic you see in the media isn't as easy as it seems for some.
"I think it's a positive trend overall because celebrities are obviously in the public, they're often very, very beautiful, very glamorous, and they seem to age differently than the rest of us," said Dr. Hamilton. "They seem to get more beautiful as time goes on, and they don't seem to get older."
She also pointed out that their ageless beauty is often attributed to simply staying hydrated or some other lifestyle hack, like "rubbing olive oil on their faces." By being honest about the work they've had done, Dr. Hamilton believes it helps patients and the public "understand that these are investments that they've made in themselves and those just did not happen simply with hard work, diet and exercise."
Plastic surgery is not a one-size-fits-all approach
Dr. Hamilton loves it when her patients bring in inspiration photos, but there's more to it than just pics or even the specifics of their surgery when it comes to achieving the same look.
"A picture is truly worth a thousand words, and I love that element to see what is in my patient's mind, but they're not translatable results," said Dr. Hamilton. "Remember, your starting point may be different from the celebrity's starting point. Your body shape may be different, your height and proportions may be different. You can't walk in and say, 'Kylie Jenner, 445 cc, half under the muscle' and ask for that same implant and expect to look like her. You may be able to achieve the exact same look, but that's when you're partnering with your plastic surgeon and trusting them to help guide you so you can choose something that is going to work on your frame with your anatomy."
How to use celebrity inspiration to your advantage
If you're inspired by a celebrity's appearance and interested in pursuing plastic surgery to achieve a similar result, consider their outcome and journey as a starting point, not a plan. Take the time to do your research by finding reliable medical sources and scheduling a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon.
Together, you can discuss your personal goals and explore safe options based on your unique anatomy.
