Latissimus Dorsi

Breast Reconstruction

Member Response:

Why is latissimus dorsi your only viable option? It sacrifices a functional muscle (your back muscle), and there are many studies that demonstrate that it is difficult to swim and climb ladders after using your latissimus dorsi muscle for breast reconstruction. If you are committed to using tissue from your back, you can do a thoracodorsal perforator (TDAP) flap instead - basically the skin and fat above the latissimus dorsi. Or you can do a DIEP flap (using lower abdominal tissue like a tummy tuck). If you have already had a tummy tuck or are too thin, then you can have a profunda artery perforator (PAP) flap using tissue from your upper inner thigh - that's what marathon runners with a BMI of 18 will have for breast reconstruction if they want to use natural tissue. Or you can undergo implant reconstruction. You just need to find a plastic surgeon who is capable of doing more advanced types of breast reconstruction.
