Peter N. Butler is widely regarded as one of the best plastic and reconstructive surgeons in practice.  Dr. Butler believes that he and his patients are partners in achieving the best results possible. “I think one of the most important things a plastic surgeon can do is listen,” says Dr. Butler. “During their initial consultation, I take time to really talk with a prospective patient. I want to understand thoroughly why someone has come to see me, what his or her expectations might be, and what I can do to help.”

Dr. Butler is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the National Board of Medical Examiners. He is also a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), and the prestigious Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. Dr. Butler also serves as an adjunct professor for the Florida State College of Medicine.  He has been practicing plastic surgery for more than 20 years. He is the co-founder of Gulf Coast Plastic Surgery, one of the largest and most well-regarded practices in Florida.

A native Floridian, Dr. Butler was born and raised in West Palm Beach, Florida. His mother, a marine biology researcher and college professor instilled a love of learning and science in him at an early age. Dr. Butler’s love of science continued in high school, where he attended St. Andrews School in Boca Raton and The Benjamin School in North Palm Beach, both considered among the top academic high schools in Florida.

Upon graduating from high school with honors, Dr. Butler attended Florida State University, where he majored in biology and chemistry. Dr. Butler not only excelled academically at FSU but athletically as well. He played for the FSU Lacrosse Team and was even a walk-on kicker for the FSU football team. After receiving his Bachelor of Science in Biology, Dr. Butler decided to pursue a graduate degree in chemistry.

While the lab held great allure for Dr. Butler, he longed to combine his love of science with his passion for helping people. Medicine seemed to be the ideal way to realize both dreams. He was accepted into the University of Florida College of Medicine. As a first-year medical student, Dr. Butler was honored to be chosen as one of 40 students to participate in the University of Florida’s Program in Medical Sciences. In addition to completing the required course work of typical first-year medical students, participants in this program also worked with practicing physicians, gaining valuable insight and “real world” experience. It was while working with the noted plastic surgeon, H. Louis Hill M.D., that Dr. Butler developed an interest in plastic and reconstructive surgery.

After receiving his medical degree from the University of Florida, Dr. Butler knew that surgery was his calling. He chose a general surgery residency position at the University of North Carolina’s program at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC. During the five-year general surgery residency, Dr. Butler honed his surgical skills. He was also known for his ability to relate to his patients and explain complicated medical issues in an easy to understand way.

The interest in plastic surgery that was piqued during his first year of medical school never waned, and Dr. Butler accepted a fellowship in plastic surgery at the University of Utah. This Florida boy had never lived where it snowed, but he took the chance in order to learn plastic and reconstructive surgery from some of the best academic surgeons in the United States.

After completing his fellowship training, Dr. Butler knew he wanted to practice in his home state of Florida. Both Dr. Butler and his wife had spent a lot of time in Northwest Florida and they knew that Pensacola was the place they wanted to live, work and raise their family.

Since establishing Gulf Coast Plastic Surgery, Dr. Butler has enjoyed the opportunity to mentor medical students as an adjunct professor of surgery for the Florida State University College of Medicine.  He also serves on the credentialing committee for Sacred Heart Hospital.

He and his wife Cathy have been married for more than 30 years. They have a son, William, and daughter, Caroline. When not working, Dr. Butler still plays and coaches lacrosse. Dr. Butler is also an avid fisherman, sports car enthusiast, and tennis player.
