Meet Dr. Darren Smith

Darren M. Smith, MD, FACS, is a board-certified plastic surgeon in Manhattan with fellowship training in aesthetic and craniofacial surgery. His practice emphasizes individualized breast and body contouring, including surgery to address changes following pregnancy. He works with each patient to develop a plan that reflects their anatomy, goals, health and recovery needs.

Personalized Mommy Makeovers in NYC

Dr. Smith specializes in personalized mommy makeovers, which may combine breast lift surgery, breast augmentation, tummy tuck and liposuction. The combination depends on the individual: not every patient needs implants, every procedure, or the same surgical approach.

Planning begins with identifying the concerns each procedure would address, including changes in breast shape or volume, excess abdominal skin, abdominal muscle separation and localized fat. Dr. Smith discusses the expected benefits, limitations, scars and recovery associated with the proposed plan.

His approach to mommy makeovers also emphasizes deciding when procedures should be combined and when they should be staged. Relevant considerations include overall health, anticipated anesthesia time, blood loss, positioning and the extent of surgery. When a proposed combination would be too extensive for one operation, he recommends dividing treatment into separate procedures.

Dr. Smith coauthored research on postpartum body contouring published in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. The work, featured by ASPS, addresses procedure selection, patient goals and considerations involved in combining breast and abdominal surgery.

Consultation and Recovery Planning

Consultations provide an opportunity to discuss your priorities, compare treatment options and understand the proposed surgical plan. Advanced 3D imaging may help illustrate potential changes and support that discussion; it does not guarantee an outcome.

Recovery planning includes practical considerations such as assistance at home, childcare, lifting restrictions and returning to work. Recommendations are tailored to the procedures performed and your individual recovery.

Surgical Facilities and Anesthesia

Dr. Smith’s private surgical suite is located within his Ritz Tower practice at 111 East 57th Street, Ground Floor, New York, NY 10022. The operating suite is accredited by AAAASF, and anesthesia care is provided by board-certified physician anesthesiologists.

For a full mommy makeover involving a tummy tuck and abdominal muscle repair, surgery is performed under general anesthesia, with a board-certified physician anesthesiologist present throughout the procedure. The surgical and recovery arrangements are discussed as part of your treatment plan.

Lipo360 and Body Contouring

Dr. Smith approaches Lipo360 by evaluating the abdomen, waist, flanks and back individually and considering how these areas contribute to overall proportions. Liposuction treatment is tailored to the distribution of fat, skin quality and the patient’s goals. Where appropriate, his approach may incorporate VASER liposuction or BodyTite.

Facial Rejuvenation

Dr. Smith also performs facelift surgery. His training in aesthetic and craniofacial surgery informs an approach that considers facial structure, balance and each patient’s individual features. Consultation focuses on the changes you would like to address and the options, limitations and recovery involved.

Your Consultation

Your consultation with Dr. Smith begins with a discussion of your goals, medical history and the changes you would like to address. Following an examination, he explains the available options, expected benefits, limitations, surgical risks, scars and recovery considerations.

For mommy makeover patients, this includes discussing breast surgery with or without implants, abdominal contouring and whether combining procedures is appropriate. Planning takes into account your health, the extent of surgery and practical considerations such as childcare, lifting restrictions and time away from work.

Where appropriate, 3D imaging may help illustrate potential changes and support the discussion. These images are planning tools and do not guarantee a surgical result.

Facilities

Dr. Smith’s private surgical suite is located within his Ritz Tower practice at 111 East 57th Street, Ground Floor, New York, NY 10022. The suite is accredited by QUAD A, and anesthesia care is provided by board-certified physician anesthesiologists.

Your surgical setting, anesthesia plan and postoperative arrangements are discussed before surgery. Planning includes the extent of the proposed procedures, your medical history and the support you will need during recovery. When a combination of procedures would be too extensive for one operation, Dr. Smith recommends staging treatment.

Tummy Tuck

Hi - thank you for your question. Those lips of skin can be very frustrating! The good news is that they are very straightforward to correct. I generally recommend waiting about a year after an initial surgery to re-operate on the same area, so you are all set whenever you feel ready.

Liposuction

Member Response:

Hi Stephanie - thank you for your question. Your issue is most likely caused by excess soft tissue relative to the amount of structural support it has. Soft tissue includes things like skin, fat and muscle. Bone (in this case your lower jaw, or "mandible") provides support for this soft tissue. Whether you have too much soft tissue or too little boney support can only be determined in an in-person consultation. If too much soft tissue is the issue, the question becomes "what kind of tissue is there too much of." If fat, liposuction is the answer. If skin or muscle, a necklift may be appropriate. If your boney support is insufficient, a chin implant might be appropriate. Of course, these procedures can be combined as necessary based on your individual anatomy. I hope this helps! - Dr. Smith

Lower abdomen protrusion... has anyone seen this before???

Tummy Tuck

Member Response:

Hi Lauren, thank you for your question. There are several possible causes for your lower abdominal bulge. These could include: fat distribution, a hernia, weakening of the tissue between your rectus abdominus muscles (rectus diastasis) or an intra-abdominal mass. While we can't provide a definite answer without knowing the specifics of your history or doing a physical exam, you can do an easy test on your own. If the bulge is easily pinched, it is most likely superficial fat. If not, it is likely a deeper issue. The most likely would probably be a rectus diastasis. While these separations between the six-pack muscles are most common after pregnancy, they can also be genetic. You should see a board certified plastic surgeon for an in-person consultation to get a definitive diagnosis and treatment plan. - Drs. Alan Matarasso & Darren Smith.

Age requirements

Aesthetic Genital Plastic Surgery

Member Response:

Hi, thanks for your question. In general, one must be 18 years to consent to a medical or surgical procedure. There are many different types of vaginal rejuvenation procedures, and it is unlikely someone of this age would need true “rejuvenation.” However, other vaginal procedures, such as to treat discomfort or other issues, may be appropriate.

Member Response:

Hi- thank you for your question. While it is safe to combine some body contouring procedures, the key in ensuring safety is limiting operative time. The combination you are describing would likely take more time than would be safe. As a next step, consider meeting with an ASPS member-surgeon in your area that specializes in combining body contouring procedures.
