Ask a Surgeon

How can I change my face shape?
FaceliftMember Response:
To some degree, yes, it is possible to change facial shape but is it wise to do so? Facial implants, fat transfer, and other measures can adjust facial dimensions and proportions but nature has endowed you with unique attributes that may be better preserved than changed.
Surgeon Solely Using Dissolvable Stitches for Tummy Tuck
Tummy TuckMember Response:
We use only dissolving sutures for tummy tuck and apply post-surgical compression garments so that as they dissolve, the abdomen remains tight and compressed until the patient's own collagen scar is sufficiently strong to replace the sutures. This is several months. Even non-dissolving (permanent) sutures do not guarantee the deep fascial plication will remain tight. If over-tightened, the abdominal wall will relax post-abdominoplasty regardless of the suture type. Sutures merely splint the tissue together early after surgery but are ultimately replaced by the patient's synthesized collagen scar during healing.
Still sensitive
Aesthetic Genital Plastic SurgeryMember Response:
Some of the measures we advise are Dermoplast or equivalent 20% benzocaine spray, Witch Hazel (Tucks or equivalent) pads, Hysqia Silk Touch intimate care , Warm baths, analgesics (Tylenol, ibuprofen, hydrocodone, oxycodone), and if it hurts when you pee, pyridium. If persistent discomfort, examination to check for wound problem and urinalysis to be sure no infection.
Still healing?
Eyelid SurgeryMember Response:
Difficult to know without photos, but in general, the result evolves over time as swelling dissipates, as eyelid compliance improves, and as tissues adapt to their new post-surgical relationships. Ptosis procedures are among the most commonly revised for the most beautiful size (palpebral aperture), shape, and symmetry. Follow up with your surgeon, and try to be patient. Swelling may or may not be prolonged after secondary (revision) procedures.

Body ContouringMember Response:
What about ObamaCare? Wasn't that program supposed to provide healthcare to everyone who needed it? I would love to help you in our San Diego surgery center, but fat transfer to the smaller side is a procedure that would cost me about $10K to perform (equipment, supplies, anesthesia, drugs, staff, operating room costs, etc.). We have an organization (Femininity Foundation) for victims of domestic violence and abuse, and could potentially consider the possibility of extending guidelines, but our referrals must come from professionals (social workers, etc.). Check out FreshStart, which performs reconstructive surgery for those in need, and also, check for Medi-Cal plastic surgeons if you're eligible for that program. Los Angeles County-USC and UCLA have plastic surgery academic programs with clinics that likely can help you.
Board Certification
FaceliftMember Response:
Dr. David Newman in Temecula is ABPS Certified, and there are others. Surgeons with the highest standards for their own performance are Diplomates of the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Beyond that, results ("before" and "after" photos) in the online gallery are a good indicator of your expected results.

Mommy MakeoverMember Response:
In agreement with Dr. Castillo, a University plastic surgery program (Emory/Grady or Medical College of Georgia) may be able to help you. Our Femininity Foundation offers free surgical procedures to victims of violence and/or domestic abuse to whom such procedures assist in their rehabilitation and recovery.
