Meet Dr. J. Mel Stewart

As a board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Stewart's philosophy centers on building deep connections and trust with every patient. With an empathetic approach, he takes the time to understand each person's unique goals and concerns, developing personalized treatment plans that enhance natural beauty and confidence. Dr. Stewart's multilingual practice provides an inclusive, warm environment where patients feel heard, supported, and empowered throughout their journey.

Dr. Joel M Stewart Jr. was born and raised in Wedowee, AL. He attended Auburn University for his undergraduate education where he earned as BS in Biochemistry. His medical school training was done at The University of Alabama School of Medicine where he earned the top honor (Galbraith Award) given to the best medical student in the surgery rotation. He then completed a full residency in General Surgery at the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham. Afterwards he completed his training in New Orleans at Tulane's Department of Plastic Surgery.
Aesthetic interests include procedures to enhance the breast, body, and face. He also specializes in non-operative procedures such as injection of botox and fillers in additions to lasers and chemical peels. He also works closely with breast cancer surgeons and dermatologists to perform reconstructive surgeries.
Married to Dr. Ashley Stewart, they live with their 3 boys in LaGrange, GA.  Dr. Stewart enjoys the outdoors and tending his family farm. He is also a devoted musician and has played in several bands including Day Jobs. He also very much enjoys college football.

Your Consultation

When you make an appointment for a consultation, our goal is to put you at ease. 

Patients are often looking to improve something about yourself that makes you self conscious or embarrassed.  My office staff will do their best to make you as comfortable as possible so that we can discuss options to try and improve the issue of concern. 
Some patients have received a devastating diagnosis of cancer.  Again, Dr. Stewart and the staff at West Georgia Center for Plastic Surgery will demonstrate empathy and concern. We will do all we can to help you through this difficult time.
Your consult will begin with a thorough medical history. After that, we will discuss your area of concern with a physical exam. Your questions and concerns are welcome throughout the process.
Then, we will concentrate on describing the procedure through pictures as well as words. Again, most people will have questions during this phase of the consult and we want you to be empowered to ask any question.
No procedure, cosmetic or reconstructive, is without risks. Dr. Stewart will do all he can to delineate the risks associated with the procedure along with any increased or specific risks as they pertain to the individual. 
At this point, we may discuss surgical options or optimal timing for your procedure. Knowing your expectations helps us in this regard.
We want you to leave your consultation with the knowledge of what is involved with your procedure and a feeling of being supported through your journey. You should feel empowered to make a thoughtful decision regarding plastic surgery.

Facilities

Most outpatient surgery is performed at Higgins General Hospital outpatient surgery facility.

Some procedures, such as breast reconstruction with breast surgeons, are performed at Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton.
We also have the ability to perform some minor procedures that do not require general anesthesia in our office.
