Meet Dr. Samuel Maurice
Dr. Maurice specializes in all areas of plastic, reconstructive, and cosmetic surgery. After receiving his medical degree from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois, Dr. Maurice completed a residency in General Surgery, followed by fellowship training in both Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and fellowship training in Craniofacial Surgery. Following training, Dr. Maurice founded Mercy Plastic Surgery, to bring his expertise to the Central Iowa region.
He is an active member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeon and is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He has also authored multiple journal articles and book chapters on various plastic surgery topics.
His individualized approach to plastic surgery helps each patient make educated decisions designed to achieve their desired outcomes. He feels that the best compliment he gets as a plastic surgeon is the many referrals he receives from his satisfied clients.

Gynecomastia

Thank you for your question. When I evaluate a patient with gynecomastia, there are many things I look at. It would be important to know if there are any medical conditions, medications, and /or drugs that could cause your gynecomastia. A physical exam to look for any other potential causes would also be important and also to feel for any lumps. In cases where no other causes are identified, surgery can be a very good option. The type of surgery really depends on each patient’s unique anatomy. From your question, it appears that your excess breast tissue is mainly under the areolas. Surgery can be very successful for you, but an in-person consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon is important. I hope this helps! Take care, Dr M.

Thank you for your question. In my practice, I often combine surgeries such as a tummy tuck and arm lift in healthy patients. I find that combing procedures is often more convenient for patients, but it does lengthen the procedure, and you would have post-operative restrictions for both recovering areas . A careful review of your medical history would be important to make sure you are a good candidate. I hope this helps!

Thank you for your question. An inverted nipple can be successfully treated in the office under local anesthesia. Before undergoing this surgery, it would be important to make sure there are no underlying breast lumps that could also cause inversion of the nipple. Dr. Maurice is amazing. I was in my mid 30's when I was diagnosed with breast cancer; I chose bilateral mastectomy after neoadjuvant chemotherapy. I was pretty worn down after chemo, so the fact that he gave me the option to have immediate reconstruction (one surgery instead of several) was a blessing. I honestly could not be any happier with the results. It's only been a month and all of my doctors have told me it's hard to believe (when looking at my new breasts) that I just had a mastectomy. When you are amidst the cancer fight, cosmetic outcomes are the least of your concern; however, after treatment has ended it's nice to retain that piece of my femininity. I'm glad that he stayed focus on good cosmetic outcomes even when that wasn't on my radar. Likewise, my recovery was speedy and honestly pretty easy. My family and I are so incredibly thankful for the surgical team of Dr. Maurice and Dr. Beck at Mercy. One more thing, the staff at his office is amazing, always helpful, and timely. Again, I could not ask for anything more.
Dr. Maurice and his entire staff were super amazing! I had skin in all the wrong places after massive weight loss and he was so kind and respectful. He was incredibly professional with just the sweetest bedside manner. His staff was phenomenal to work with during the entire process as well.
