How to best plan for the year ahead if you’re considering plastic surgery

how to best plan for the year ahead if you’re considering plastic surgery

Many reflect on themselves and the changes they'd like to see in the coming months as the new year begins. Whether it's spending more time with family, getting back into shape or focusing on learning a new skill, a new year is always filled with the promise of opportunity for positive change.

The start of a new year is an excellent time to consider taking the plunge on an aesthetic procedure that you've been considering. Shifting your mindset to make positive changes offers a great opportunity to boost your confidence by addressing a concern about your appearance.

If you have been considering plastic surgery in the year ahead and are not sure where to start, we're happy to help. To gather insights around best practices for patients considering an aesthetic procedure in the upcoming year, we reached out to ASPS Member Surgeon Josef Hadeed, MD.

Best practices for patients ahead of surgery

There are a few things you can do to set yourself up for success before an aesthetic procedure. Start by doing extensive research in advance.

"Probably the most important step in the process is to do your homework," said Dr. Hadeed. "Carefully research who the board-certified plastic surgeons are in your area who specialize in the specific procedure you are interested in. Look at their websites, their before and after photos and their reviews. Also consider scheduling multiple consultations to get a sense of the style of each surgeon and their offices."

While you are considering the right surgeon, it's also important to think about when and where you'd like to have it done.

"I advise patients to start planning for surgery several months ahead of time," said Dr. Hadeed.

You can find a surgeon who fits your schedule, and you can choose an appropriate time that allows you space to recover with advance planning.

The "sticker shock" that can come with some procedures is often unexpected for many patients. Understand the full cost of the procedure and plan for it financially.

"Budget realistically for the procedure, as this is an investment you are making with your own body," said Dr. Hadeed. "There are often financing options available to assist you."

Prepare a list of any questions that you may have ahead of your consultation with a potential surgeon. This will help ease any fears you may have about the procedure and give you the opportunity to learn more about the surgery and recovery process.

"During the consultation, it is important to ask questions regarding the pre-surgery and post-recovery process," said Dr. Hadeed. "There may be certain testing requirements your surgeon wants prior to surgery."

Best practices for patients following surgery

One of the most important aspects of an aesthetic procedure is the recovery process. There are actions you can take to set yourself up for a successful recovery.

Start by following your surgeon's directions. It's also critical to plan for enough downtime to fully and properly recover.

"Often, the recovery process is longer than what most patients anticipate, so it is advised to also get a good sense of what that would look like for your specific procedure," said Dr. Hadeed.

Taking a trip, traveling for work or just commuting long distances? It's important to give yourself adequate recovery time, as the stress of traveling can extend the recovery timeline.

"I also like to advise patients to plan for the recovery after surgery as if you are planning for a trip," said Dr. Hadeed.

Following a plastic surgery procedure, it's important that you have the right setup to maximize your recovery process.

"Create a comfortable space at home, as you will need to adjust to the recovery period," said Dr. Hadeed. "Do all of your laundry and meal prep in the days leading up to surgery. Optimize your body by getting to your ideal body weight, exercising as much as possible and eating a clean diet."

Set up a support system to keep you on the right track as you recover. Whether it's your partner or spouse, close friends or family members, having someone or a few people around can help set you up for success and a smooth recovery.

"You also should consider other things, such as the time you need off work, assistance at home and other things such as child or pet care," said Dr. Hadeed.

Possibilities for the new year always shine bright. From introducing new healthy habits to learning new skills to finally taking the plunge on an aesthetic procedure that you've been considering, there are countless ways to boost your confidence and set yourself up for an amazing year ahead. By following the right steps before and after plastic surgery, you can be perfectly prepared for a successful procedure, a smooth recovery and the results of your dreams.
