What's new in male plastic surgery?

Once a quieter segment of the aesthetic market, male patients are now seeking treatments in greater numbers, driven by evolving beauty standards, workplace competitiveness and a broader cultural acceptance of self-improvement. Today's male aesthetic goals tend to focus on refinement rather than transformation, with an emphasis on looking refreshed, confident and natural.

From jawline contouring and eyelid surgery to body sculpting and minimally invasive treatments, the range of options available to men has expanded significantly. Surgeons are also developing more specialized approaches that account for male anatomy, skin characteristics and aesthetic preferences. And as interest continues to grow, innovation in male-focused techniques and technologies is reshaping the future of plastic surgery, making it more inclusive and tailored than ever before.

To learn more about these innovations and growing interest in male-centric plastic surgery, we reached out to ASPS Member Surgeons Daniel Beck, MD, and Josef Hadeed, MD, FACS.

The evolving approach of the male patient within aesthetics

Before diving into what's new in this area, it's important to first understand how the male perspective has evolved in this area. This evolution is particularly relevant to how men approach aesthetic procedures.

"Five to 10 years ago, many men sought procedures discreetly, often focusing on corrective issues rather than enhancement, and were more concerned about recovery time impacting their work or lifestyle," said Dr. Hadeed. "Today, they're more proactive and informed, researching options online and prioritizing natural, subtle results that enhance rather than transform. There's also a greater emphasis on holistic outcomes – combining surgery with skincare, fitness and nutrition – to achieve long-term vitality. This shift reflects a more empowered patient who views aesthetics as part of overall health optimization."

Still, despite this shift, experts say men are only beginning to close the gap with women in the aesthetic space.

"Men are still behind women in the aesthetic space, largely because they're only now becoming comfortable acknowledging that caring about how they look isn't something they have to keep to themselves or justify anymore," said Dr. Beck. "They see aesthetic procedures as a way to enhance what they already have, not as a sign of insecurity. Five to 10 years ago, most men didn't even consider aesthetic procedures unless there was a functional problem, for example, when heavy upper eyelids started interfering with vision and an upper blepharoplasty became medically necessary or when a turkey neck became impossible to ignore."

While perspectives around approach have shifted, the focus on subtlety has remained tried and true.

"Subtlety is paramount in male plastic surgery, as most men want enhancements that fly under the radar," said Dr. Hadeed. "The end goal is for men to look refreshed and confident, as if they've just returned from a great vacation, rather than altered. This approach reduces stigma and encourages more men to explore options comfortably."

Trending procedures for the male patient

As the field of male plastic surgery experiences tremendous growth, certain procedures have emerged as the most popular.

"The core three will continue to remain strong – gynecomastia surgery, liposuction and rhinoplasty," said Dr. Beck. "These procedures address some of the most common male concerns and anatomical challenges, and they've become foundational in male plastic surgery, much like breast augmentation has been for women."

Surgeons are seeing this trend across practices, with similar procedure preferences among male patients.

"Among my male patients, the most popular surgical procedures include gynecomastia correction, liposuction for body contouring and blepharoplasty eyelid surgery," said Dr. Hadeed. "I expect this lineup to remain stable in the coming years, and probably more of a demand for high-definition body contouring to create a more defined and athletic look."

The biggest shift that is occurring within the field of male plastic surgery is how these patients are approaching their treatment.

"Rather than viewing procedures as one-off fixes, men are more often combining procedures to address multiple concerns at once," said Dr. Beck. "For example, liposuction may be paired with chin or jawline contouring, and gynecomastia surgery is frequently combined with abdominal definition to create a more balanced result. We're also seeing increasing interest in penile girth enhancement, which I expect will continue to move into the mainstream."

While men have always paid attention to facial aesthetics, it's becoming increasingly common for them to take a proactive approach to their appearance.

"The face has always been a major area of concern for men, especially skin laxity or loss of definition (hollowness)," said Dr. Beck. "What's changing is that men are no longer waiting for this to become severe. We're seeing increased interest in full face and neck lift procedures as men become more aware that they can be done earlier and achieve significant results while still looking natural and not overdone. Early-intervention upper and lower eyelid surgery is also in high demand. Even slight eyelid heaviness or undereye puffiness is becoming less tolerable. Men want to look more alert and rested, and blepharoplasty addresses heavy upper lids and undereye bags without changing the overall look of the face."

Beyond lifting procedures, men are also seeking treatments that enhance facial structure and definition.

"Across the board, rhinoplasty remains a top choice for refining the nose while maintaining a strong profile," said Dr. Hadeed. "Blepharoplasty is popular for reducing puffiness or hooding to create a more alert, youthful look. Jawline contouring, often via implants, fillers or surgical sculpting, has seen a spike as men seek defined, chiseled features."

Beyond surgical procedures, male patients have shown significant growth in the use of minimally invasive treatments.

"There's a marked increase in demand for noninvasive or minimally invasive procedures among male patients, as they offer quick recovery and low commitment, which is ideal for busy professionals," said Dr. Hadeed. "The most popular include Botox and dermal fillers, but laser treatments for skin resurfacing and hair restoration via PRP injections are also gaining traction."

The future of the field of male plastic surgery

With a stronger focus on male patients, there is no doubt that we'll continue to see innovations in treatment options that cater to their unique needs.

"Regenerative medicine, like stem cell-enriched fat grafting, will enhance healing and longevity of results in body contouring," said Dr. Hadeed. "AI-driven 3D simulation tools will allow hyper-personalized planning, predicting outcomes with greater accuracy. These advancements may make procedures safer, more efficient and accessible, ultimately benefiting men by delivering precise, natural enhancements with less risk."

Another area of innovation lies in support for the patients themselves.

"What we're doing now is directly shaping where male plastic surgery is headed," said Dr. Beck. "The biggest shift is the integration of supportive technologies and optimization strategies that improve outcomes before, during and after surgery. These are no longer optional add-ons. They are becoming foundational to how male patients are treated."

A final consideration for male patients is the possibility of creating custom implants.

"Custom implants are a major part of that future," said Dr. Beck. "We are using advanced 3D technology to design highly customized pectoral implants, and we're seeing meaningful advancements in calf, bicep and facial implant design as well. Because these implants are tailored to each patient's anatomy, the results look stronger, more natural and properly proportional rather than artificial."

As more men increasingly explore aesthetic treatments, the field of plastic surgery is continuing to adapt to meet their unique goals and expectations. With techniques designed specifically for male anatomy and a growing range of both surgical and nonsurgical options, patients can achieve results that enhance their features while preserving a natural, masculine appearance.

Looking ahead, continued innovation and increasing openness around men's aesthetic care will likely make male plastic surgery an even more prominent and normalized part of the aesthetic landscape.
