Ensuring Lasting Smiles Act

Advocating for Patients

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons supports this bipartisan legislation, which requires all group and individual health plans to cover medically necessary reconstructive procedures to treat congenital anomalies.

What is ASPS doing to advocate for patients with congenital anomalies?

ASPS has been a strong supporter of the Ensuring Lasting Smiles Act since its introduction in the 115th Congress. The Society has worked closely with the bill sponsor, Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) to secure reintroduction of the bill and support its advancement in the 116th Congress. Since 2018, the Society has built a strong coalition of health care professionals and patient advocacy groups through the ELSA Coalition dedicated to advancing this issue. Additionally, ASPS has connected with industry to generate broader support for the bill. ASPS has advocated on this issue by deploying grassroots campaigns and conducting in-person meetings with members of Congress to request that they support this bipartisan legislation.
