Chest Masculinization Surgery

Surgery for Trans Men

The goal of chest masculinization surgery is to remove the breast tissue from both breasts and shape the skin, tissue and nipples to give a masculine appearance to the chest.

What is chest masculinization surgery?

The goal of chest masculinization surgery, commonly called "top surgery," is to remove the breast tissue from both breasts (mastectomy) and shape the skin, tissue and nipples to give a more masculine contour and appearance to the chest. Chest masculinization surgery is typically performed as a single-stage, outpatient procedure. There are several techniques used to perform chest masculinization surgery, and many factors should be taken into consideration when choosing which technique is best:

  • Amount of breast tissue
  • Amount of excess skin
  • Desired nipple position
  • Size of the areola (pigmented skin surrounding the nipple)
  • Desire for nipple sensation
