Masculinizing Genital Surgery

Surgery for Trans Men

The goal of masculinizing genital surgery is to use existing female genital tissue, and sometimes tissue from another part of the body, to create a surgically constructed neophallus (neopenis).

Who is a good candidate for masculinizing genital surgery?

Masculinizing genital surgery is a highly individualized procedure. You should only consider it for your own reasons, not to fulfill someone else's wishes or to try to fit any sort of idealized image.

Masculinizing genital surgery should not be performed unless:

  • You have been under the care of two mental health professionals who can each provide a letter of recommendation supporting your decision to undergo this surgery
  • You are of the age to provide legal consent
  • You have a positive outlook and realistic expectations
  • You are actively addressing any significant medical or mental health concerns
  • You have a healthy body mass index (BMI) – some surgeons may require you to have a BMI within a certain range before scheduling surgery
