Masculinizing Genital Surgery

Surgery for Trans Men

The goal of masculinizing genital surgery is to use existing female genital tissue, and sometimes tissue from another part of the body, to create a surgically constructed neophallus (neopenis).

What words should I know about masculinizing genital surgery?

Flap

A term for the tissues that will be used to create the neophallus.

General anesthesia

Drugs and/or gases used during an operation to relieve pain and alter consciousness.

Hematoma

Blood pooling beneath the skin.

Intravenous sedation

Sedatives administered by injection into a vein to help you relax.

Local anesthesia

A drug injected directly into the site of an incision during an operation to relieve pain.

Metoidioplasty

A surgery to construct a neophallus using an enlarged clitoris.

Phalloplasty

A surgery to construct a neophallus using tissues from various parts of the body.

Urethroplasty

A procedure that reconstructs the urethra.

Vaginectomy

A procedure that removes the inner lining of the vagina and closes off the space prior to constructing the neophallus.
